Preparing for Pregnancy; Mentally, Physically and Spiritually
81
There is something very organic and anticipatory about planting a seed. The planter will make sure the soil is fertile and nutrient-rich, pliable and able to absorb water easily. The conditions have to be just right in order for the seed to sprout and take root. The plant then needs proper exposure to sunlight and air, receiving adequate water in order to continue growing and able to produce fruit. The fruit is the reward, the result of the labor intensive process of growth from a seed.
Preparing for Pregnancy
The same process can be applied to preparing for pregnancy. A seed is impregnated and a new life is forming inside the womb. The fruit of the seed is a new life, a brand new baby, a human being brought into the world.
"I want to get pregnant. I want a baby." The dream of many women is to have a baby and it's certainly one of life's grandest miracles. It helps for the woman to prepare herself not only physically, but mentally (emotionally) and spiritually. If in a relationship or marriage, the partner needs to be ready also, making preparations so that the conditions are as perfect as possible. I realize there are different lifestyles and methods of conception, and preparation is essential and beneficial for all involved. Are you ready to be pregnant? Are you ready to make a new life and be a mother and father?
The moment you know you are pregnant, your lives will change. You may sense it within you, or you may take one of the at home pregnancy tests (make sure your partner is with you to look at the results!), but once it's confirmed, you will feel and become more aware of your body and the changes taking place. The couple now prepares to become a family.

Physical Preparation for Pregnacy
Even before pregnancy, it's important for both male and female to be eating nutrient-rich, healthy food. Physical exercise helps the body become stronger and allows more oxygenated blood to flow throughout the body. I like to equate it to the soil preparation for the seed. The healthier the soil, the better conditions there are for a healthy seed sprouting and growing properly. The healthier and stronger the male and female bodies are, the better chances for a fertile, successful impregnation and a healthy, growing fetus. The female body goes through enormous hormonal and physical changes during pregnancy and the stronger she is, the better prepared she will be for labor and birth and post recovery.
Physical preparation for the female includes taking a multi-vitamin that includes 400 mcg of folic acid. Make sure you are at a healthy weight and it is helpful to have a pre-pregnancy check-up. If the female smokes, it is best to stop smoking and refrain from illegal drugs and alcohol. Try to stay away from second-hand smoke. Avoid any harmful chemicals which can be present in cleaning products. Once a woman is pregnant, all of these pre-cautions are very important.
Mental (Emotional) Preparation for Pregnancy
I think it helps for both partners to be ready mentally because it's the beginning of a new, exciting chapter in your lives. Start reading pregnancy books to learn as much as you can about the different stages. Learn how to prevent or relieve nausea. Begin to realize that pregnancy is only the beginning of this new chapter and make a commitment to do the very best possible to make the conditions of highest quality.
Start practicing letting go of perfectionist expectations if you tend to be a controlling type person. Every pregnancy is different. Control what you can control and do it well, but also learn how to relax your thoughts and it will help physically.
It is time to ask questions
of yourself and your partner and discuss together what you think and how
you feel. It helps to write down your answers as often writing
reinforces our thoughts, or we read what we have written and see that
it's really not what we feel. Above all, be honest.
- Why do you want a baby?
- Is your relationship ready for a pregnancy and new baby?
- How will it affect your career and educational goals?
- Do you and your partner agree on religious/spiritual matters in regard to how your child will be raised? If there are differences, have they been discussed thoroughly?
- Are you financially established and prepared?
- Will you stay home or need child care?
- Would you be ready for a special needs child or caring for a sick baby?
- Are you ready to give up leisure time or sleeping in?
- Do you enjoy spending time with children?
- Can you mentally picture yourself as a parent?
These are
questions that will help assist you in preparing mentally for a
pregnancy and the new life that you and your partner will create
together.
Spiritual Preparation for Pregnancy
Whether one believes in a godly power or not, there is a spiritual essence within every human being. It is part of who we are, the 'being' aspect of a human. Preparing spiritually is making the connection of creating a new life, the miracle of co-creating with your partner. The new baby will be made from both of you, sharing traits from your parents and grandparents. To attempt to understand the beginning of life is actually learning about and understanding our past generations, our ancestral lineage.
To
create a new life is a continuation of the grand circle of life of
which we are all a part. The couple together can consciously bring
awareness to the the new life growing within. Touch and mental imagery,
song, beautiful thoughts will help build awareness and connection
between the partners and their growing baby. Preparing spiritually
includes acceptance of the awesome joy and responsibility of
contributing a new life to join humankind.
Conclusion
In preparing for pregnancy, both partners will feel better equipped to go through the different stages together. Communication is so important before pregnancy, because once it happens, your lives are changing and you want to be ready. Being mentally, physically and spiritually prepared as a couple can only help with the unpredictable nature of pregnancy. This preparation can strengthen your relationship as you prepare to enter the next chapter of your lives together.

excellent hub! I hope the youth who are so excited to give birth can read this piece so that they will wait for the right time. Adults sometimes tend not to look at consequences of not planning and they enagaged in some risky behaviors such as smoking etc.
I rated this up Ms Rebekahelle, Maita
Excellent - preparation is the most important! If people would not be so impatient, the world would be more peacefull place to live on.
YOur Hub is full of wisdom - and really beautiful. Thank you for enjoyment to read it.
Wow you touched on so many important issues. I really enjoyed this hub and I love your analogy in regards to planting a seed. Very nicely don. Rated Up!

Nothing I read, watched, or listened to prepared me for the journey of motherhood. It is an experience all its own and to each their own.
To my careless-ness in December 2009 in a new 25 day old relationship, just out of a divorce we found ourselves waiting around for my monthly "gift." It never came.. January it never came.. Finally in February he talked me into taking a pregnancy test. It took me 4 at home pg test, and a blood test at the Dr's office to admit I was pregnant. I thought I couldn't get pregnant from being married for 2 years, and never ending up with a little one. I've made some bad fast food choices, smoked, I even drank the first week of my pregnancy, but I didn't know I was pregnant, or that I even could get pregnant.. I'm happy to report though my son is growing just fine at 36 weeks, and when he hits full term he will be a 8 1/2 lb baby. My boyfriend became my fiance when he found out he was going to be a daddy, he did smoke weed, he quit, he did drink, he quit. He got a job making 8 dollars more than what he did. But he hasn't learn the value of money yet, of bills, and of causing me stress. Some things just take time. But I agree with annmeadows, to each their own. Theres no golden rule on how to be a perfect parent. And I've got to honestly say you get in trouble if you have beer or other drugs in your system and in your baby's system. You could lose your child, which you should. But it's not illegal to smoke cigarettes while pregnant. So as much as people look down on this, if it was so horribly bad, why is it not illegal?
Nice hub, written well on a very important topic. Many people didn't realize how easy and healthy will go their pregnancy if they are prepared for it "Mentally, Physically and Spiritually". Thanks.
Great hub! beautiful. well done.
Rebellovin, don't forget, for years people were unaware of smoking problems and had perfectly healthy babies. We do our best in our now, and quite honestly when a baby wants to come and wants to be healthy, there's no stopping them. there in lies the spiritual side of the equation!
Don't worry and hope you are enjoying your new bundle. babies are beautiful beings from the very beginning.
Thanks again for the great hub rebekah!
very interesting hub- thanks to people who share such informative ideas regarding pregnancy. this hub is a answer for all woman who is preparing for pregnancy.A man and a woman should perfectly set their mind before getting a new person in their life.
Beautiful and an interesting article which i so much enjoyed reading from.
nice and cool hub
Very nice article. This is exactly what I am writing my paper on right now.
I appreciate your comment about the different lifestyles that exist and I respect your right to focus on a male and female. However, I am a lesbian and though this article is still useful to me regardless, I have to say, it would mean a lot to me if my lifestyle were included. It seems like it would be pretty easy to take out the gender references and let it include everyone. Just thought I'd let you know my feelings!
A very insightful article. I'm 5 months pregnant with my second child right now and despite having a 2 year old already, I know things are about to change again. This hub should be especially helpful to young people you might see "Teen Mom" as reality. Parenting is hard, rewarding work!
I cannot stress enough the value of your article/hub. So great to see you are invoking so many wonderful responses too. Too much research out there to ignore it; a fertile and healthy life creates a fertile and healthy life. As a Fertile Living founder/coach who has a 3 month waitlist, this empowerment is much needed out there in the world. It is the least we can do for our child, and one that will never stop paying forward. Thank you again for your wonderful work, to help parents mindfully and powerfully step into their amazing and not so easy path in life. Blessings! Elisabeth

What a smart and beautiful Hub rE! So many people jump into parenthood without even asking themselves the basic questions you have outlined here. Because I am without children, I am fully aware of the activities and financial advantages I'm now able to enjoy through my twist of fate. (I bet you're a terrific Mom!)
